Aluminum Storm Windows

Three Reasons For Buying Aluminum Storm Windows

Storm windows, especially aluminum storm windows, have been much maligned over the years. Despite the benefits of having storm windows, people have historically detested them because they were hard to install and difficult to store. In addition, aluminum was considered to be a conductor of cold air and not very efficient when used in any kind of windows. However, aluminum windows were given a totally bad rap that they didn’t deserve and have also seen a lot of improvements since that time. Actually, there are a lot of benefits to buying windows for your older home, including insulation, noise reduction, and UV protection.

Storm windows can be purchased to either fit inside or outside of your home. While it’s probably easier to install inside windows, your existing windows don’t receive the protection they get from being covered by the storms. People usually use storm windows as added insulation when their homes only have old, single-paned windows. Storms can increase the energy efficiency in both heating and cooling  in a home by as much as 50%.  One of the reasons that storm windows do this so effectively is because there is an insulating air space between the storm and the window that stops the conduction of air from inside to outside and back as well as reduces the amount of air infiltration.

Another of the values you can get from aluminum storm windows is the significant reduction of noise filtering into your home from outside. Even if you live in a rural area, there can be outside noises that disturb your sleep or invade the privacy of your living space. The effectiveness of the noise reduction is influenced by the type of glazing you select. For maximum noise protection, choose 3/16” laminated glass which is made up using a PVB inner layer sandwiched between two panes of glass.

A third benefit from buying storm windows is the reduction of UV rays which get into your home and fade your carpets and furniture. While not the only factor that can cause fading, it is responsible for about 40% of all color damage. Having storm windows that contain a UV filtering acrylic can make all the difference in the useful life of your interiors.
